Overview

This tour is the ultimate Gorilla tracking tour, it does not get any better than this! You will track the Mountain Gorillas in the only 3 countries which hosts these endangered animals. You will visit Volcanoes N.P. in Rwanda, Bwindi impenetrable forest N.P. in Uganda and Virunga N.P. in the Democratic Republic of Congo. All 3 Gorilla tracking permits are included!

Day 1
Welcome to Rwanda

A representative of Flame tree village shall be at Kigali Airport to pick you up from your flight.

Depending on your arrival time you can visit some of Kigali’s craft markets, to browse amongst the pottery, carvings, batik, weaving, sculpture, musical instruments, leather and fabrics on offer. Prepare to haggle! All activities today are at your own cost.

You will spend the night at a lovely accommodation. Flame tree village is ideally located on the outskirts of Kigali. You will enjoy the tranquillity. The rooms have an en-suite bathroom and overlook the tropical gardens. There is a swimming pool to refresh yourself.

Day 2
Volcanoes national park in Rwanda

A representative of Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge will pick you up from your accommodation in Kigali. You will continue your journey to the Virunga ranges, home of the Mountain Gorilla. You shall stay at one of the lodges known for its tranquility and views.

Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge is situated at the base of the Volcanoes National Park, home to endangered mountain gorillas

The lodge has been built using environmentally friendly local materials such as Bamboos made fitted by a local community workmanship. Each cottage has its own terrace and a self-contained bathroom offers eco-luxury comfort to all guests.

Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge will introduce you to the thrilling pleasures of some of the world’s most magnificent wildlife spectacles, pampered in luxury, but in synchronization with the simply rhythms of nature and life.

Day 3
Gorilla tracking in Rwanda

Today you will go for your first Gorilla tracking of this tour. From the briefing point your driver/guide will take you as close as possible to the starting-point of your tracking. Your track will be an exciting journey along forested slopes, entwined vines, bushes and bamboo before you eventually reach the Gorillas’ habitat. En-route, your guide will point out signs of previous Gorilla activity, including dung, nests and chewed bamboo shoots.

The time taken to track the Gorillas can take as little as half an hour to as much as 8 hours! Once the Gorillas have been located, you will be allowed a maximum of one hour with them. Coming face-to-face with a Mountain Gorilla is a truly humbling and emotional experience. This is a fantastic and privileged opportunity to get up close and personal with Rwanda’s own ‘Gorillas in the Mist’.

Day 4
Lake Mutanda in Uganda

A representative of Mutanda Lake Resort will be Le Bambou Gorilla lodge to pick you up. From volcanoes national park you will be transferred in about 3 hours to Mutanda Lake Resort in Uganda.

Mutanda Lake Resort is spectacularly located on a private peninsula stretching into Lake Mutanda. With small islands dotting the surrounding lake and a backdrop of misty volcanoes in nearby Rwanda and Dr Congo this setting never fails to impress visitors. The main building where the restaurant is located resembles a Swiss chalet with an African touch, the perfect place to enjoy a sun downer watching otters visiting the shore, or to cuddle up next to the fire place. The cottages are built on a wooden platform, each with private veranda and en-suite bathroom.

Day 5
Gorilla tracking in Uganda

Your driver will pick you up early morning from the lodge. He will transfer you to the starting point of the gorilla tracking. He will wait for you and bring you back to the lodge when finished.

The Gorillas you will track belong to one of nine habituated family groups who can tolerate the presence of humans for a brief period every day. Your trek will be an exciting journey along forested slopes, entwined vines, bushes and bamboo before you eventually reach the Gorillas’ habitat. En-route, your guide will point out signs of previous Gorilla activity, including dung, nests and chewed bamboo shoots. Once the Gorillas have been located, your group will be allowed a maximum of one hour with them. Coming face-to-face with a Mountain Gorilla is a truly humbling and emotional experience.

Day 6
Democratic Republic of Congo

The driver/guide of Mutanda Lake resort will take you to Bunagana border. If you used our Visa services you Visa approval will be ready at the border and you will receive your Congolese Visa in your passport. On the other side your Congolese drive/guide will be waiting to take you to Virunga National park.

The Virunga N.P. is the oldest national park in Africa and it is the most varied region on the entire continent and home to the endangered Mountain Gorillas and Chimpanzee. It boasts the only glacier in Africa with its Rwenzori Mountains and has typical savanna grass land near Lake Edward and the Rwindi plains.

Just outside the Virunga National Park boundary lays the Bukima tented camp, which is one of the main starting points Virunga mountain gorilla treks.

Day 7
Gorilla tracking in DR Congo

Today is an exciting day and the second tracking of this tour. Today you will stand eye-to-eye with the Mountain Gorilla.

Virunga National park is an UNESCO world heritage site and the oldest national park on the continent! This national park has been hidden from the public for a long time due to civil war and unrest in Eastern Congo. At this moment it is fully operational and the perfect place to track the mountain gorillas in the wild. Starting at the headquarters in Rumangabo you will go for a challenging hike in search of these gentle giants. Once you see the mountain gorillas you have one hour to photograph and admire them before you turn back to the headquarters.

In the afternoon you have time to visit the Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage famous from the Netflix documentary Virunga. four mountain gorilla’s are nurtured in this orphanage. Tonight you will sleep in one of the most luxury lodges in DR Congo, Mikeno lodge.

Day 8
Kigali

Today is unfortunately your last day with Matoke tours. Depending on your international departure at Kigali airport you can still have time to enjoy the Virunga national park and surrounding. Please note that the check-out time at Mikeno lodge is 10 AM.

The driver of Virunga National park will take you to Goma border. On the other side you will meet with your driver/guide who will make sure you are at the airport in time to catch your flight home. Sadly this is where you say goodbye to Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo.

It is possible to arrange a day room on one of the hotels in Kigali to refresh yourself before your flight.
