8-Day Highland and Lowland Gorillas Rwanda Tour - 8 Days

The tour focuses on highland and lowland Gorillas of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Highland gorillas are found in Virunga national park while the lowland gorillas are found in Kahuzi Biega national park. In between the fascinating Gorilla encounters is a hike to Mt. Nyiragongo; an active volcano. The tour also goes to Nyungwe forest national park and Kibuye in Rwanda.

Day 1
Arrival in Kigali

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport in Rwanda and after finalizing the formalities, you shall be welcomed by your guide, who will then drive you to your hotel. Depending on your time of arrival, you may take a brief city tour or a stroll around the streets of Kigali city.

Day 2
City tour of Kigali and drive to Gisenyi

Today, you will enjoy city tour of Kigali, visit the Genocide Museum in the suburb Gisozi. You may also take a walk through the colorful markets of Kigali. After wards you will drive to Gisenyi thereafter cross the border into Congo and proceed to Goma for an overnight.

Day 3
Gorilla trekking in Virunga National park

Today, you will drive to Virunga National Park in Congo for Gorilla trekking. The park is known for its exceptional biodiversity, containing more bird, mammal and reptile species than any protected area on the African continent as well as the Mountain Gorillas. Mountain gorillas are highly intelligent, good natured, and fascinating to observe. People are equally struck by the tenderness and care that mothers show their young. And then, of course, there are the juveniles who spend most of every waking hour at play and never cease to make visitors smile. We believe your time with Virunga’s mountain gorillas will leave you feeling changed for the better.

Day 4
Hike Mount Nyiragongo

Today you will hike the Nyiragongo crater. Nyiragongo Volcano is located in the east of DRC, around 19 km from Goma, and is the most active and violent volcanoes on the Continent with the world’s most fluid and largest lava lake in the world. The hike to the crater of Nyiragongo at the peak takes about 5-6 hours, following an impressive trail through a tropical rainforest, and then through the lava flows of 2002 and volcanic desert. At the peak you will find the rim of 1.2km wide crater which reveals the inside of the deep lave lake, this is a thrilling experience despite the hot and uncomfortable climbing conditions. The route is clear and not so steep with a lot of birds and small mammals. You will have an insight in to the impact of the 2002 eruption that left Goma resembling a modern day Pompeii with cars and houses trapped in the lava flow.

Day 5
Descend Mount Nyiragongo, boat ride to Bukavu

Today you will wake up with fresh incredible memories, have breakfast and then descend down from Nyiragongo Volcano. You will then take a boat ride from Goma to Bukavu where you will spend an overnight. Enjoy scenic views on the boat trip to the beautiful town.

Day 6
Gorilla trekking in Kahuzi Biega, drive to Nyungwe

You will drive to Kahuzi Biega National park and after briefing from the park headquarters start your trek of the Eastern lowland gorillas. According to the census survey of eastern lowland gorillas reported by the Wildlife Conservation Society in April 2011, at least 181 gorillas were recorded in the park. Afterwards you will drive back to Bukavu and cross the border into Rwanda. Proceed to Nyungwe Forest National Park.

Day 7
Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe, drive to Kibuye

After breakfast you will go chimp trekking in Nyungwe Forest. Nyungwe Forest National Park protects the largest single tract of Montane forest remaining in Africa. Nyungwe National Park is most treasured for its primates, there is a remarkable 13 primate species recorded resident in this lush rainforest. This includes man’s closest living relative, the chimpanzee as well as the delightful L’Hoest’s monkey and numerous fun-loving troops of Black and White Colobus. Later, drive to Kibuye.

Day 8
Drive to Kigali and departure

Today, you will drive to the capital of Rwanda in Kigali. Enroute you will take a visit to Butare National Museum. Arrive in Kigali and have lunch at a local restaurant. In the evening you will be transferred to Airport to catch your flight back home.
